Companies have always produced financial, sales, and operation reports to understand how the company is performing. The problem is that reports are manually created and often require the amalgamation of data from a number of sources as well as analysis by business people to create summaries for senior management. This process is costly and often so slow that the company cannot react quickly enough to fix issues. Technology has often caused more problems then it solved by creating more data in more places and at different stages in the Information Life Cycle. Worse still is that technology has allowed business to be performed much quicker and failures to make decisions has greater impacts.

BI seeks to provide a number of tools to the business allowing more immediate access to data resulting in faster business decisions.

Data Warehousing
Data warehousing allows for data from a number of systems to be collected, combined and possibility analysis to be done allowing reporting on a wide range of information. Data warehousing tends to be used where legacy systems provide only end of day processing and do not lend them selves to more integrative capabilities.

Service Orientated Architecture
A Service Oriented Architecture allows for data to be called from a system through a live interface. This allows for live reporting on data to be analyzed and reported on demand. For SOA to be effective the correctness of all data, and the rules relating the data, must be well defined.

Dashboards
Dashboard reporting provides a live and dynamic reporting tool that shows the current data for any given information. Dashboards may be used based on a single system, as in the case of a call queue, or on data analysis feeds as may be supported by a SOA.
